Hawthorn star Tom Mitchell has praised his side for their toughness against the Swans tonight and singled out the physicality added by young Hawks like Jai Newcombe, Will Day and others.
Mitchell said the side did some boxing this week to boost their toughness.
“We have to train for that,” Mitchell told Channel Seven.
“We haven’t been tough enough and that was the focus tonight. “The Swans have always been ahead in that area of the game and we had to match them.“
Mitchell praised Newcombe for the toughness he brought to the side and the first-gamer said he couldn’t be happier with his debut.
Newcombe had 12 possessions and 14 tackles on debut.
“It’s really good to get on the inside and work with the boys in the midfield,” Newcombe told Channel Seven.
“It is all about the pressure. If we brought that, we knew we would come away with a good result.
Newcombe said Box Hill coach and former Hawks premiership star Sam Mitchell had mentored him at VFL level which helped him make the leap to the AFL since they selected him in the mid-season draft.
He had six or seven family members allowed to travel to Sydney late in the week to see his debut.
“It’s been a big ride over the last few weeks. I didn’t really see myself in this position,” Newcombe told Channel Seven.
“I am very happy and lucky.”
