Squid Game’s O Yeong-su wins Golden Globe- but what did he look like young?


Squid Game star O Yeong-su, known for playing the role of the old man Oh Il-nam in the show, has picked up a Golden Globe at the 2022 awards ceremony.

This is O Yeong-su’s first Golden Globe nomination, and the website states:

“He received his first Golden Globe nomination for the Netflix smash hit Squid Game. Widely regarded as one of the greatest stage actors in South Korea, he started acting on stage in 1963.”

What else has O Yeong-su been in?

O Yeong-su was born on October 19th 1944, making him 77 years old. Although Squid Game is his most widely recognised work, O Yeong-su actually boasts an impressive resume.

The actor started out his career with acting in theatre in 1963. According to the Golden Globes, he has appeared in over 200 productions. He has even played the role of King Lear twice, once in 2010 and once in 2017.

O Yeong-su has won the Dong-A Theatre Award (1979), Baeksang Arts Award (1994), and the National Theatre Association of Korea (2000) for Best Actor.

In 2003, O Yeong-su played a monk in the film Spring, Summer, Winter, Fall… and Spring and a Temple Master in A Little Monk.

O Yeong-su wins Golden Globe

O Yeong-su took home the award for Best Supporting Actor In A TV Drama at the Golden Globes on 9th January for his role in Squid Game.

At 77, O Yeong-su is now the oldest male actor to ever win a Golden Globe. Other nominees in the category were Kieran Culkin for Succession, Ted Lasso star Brett Goldestein and The Morning Show’s Billy Crudup and Mark Duplass.

O Yeong-su was the only winner from Squid Game, however the show was also nominated for Best TV Drama and Best Performance In A TV Drama for Lee Jung-jae.
