Newcastle United are interested in signing Chris Smalling from AS Roma in the January transfer window, according to Il Romanista.

Il Romanista have reported that Newcastle have made a bid for the former Manchester United central defender.

The Premier League club’s bid is claimed to be €12 million (£10.01 million).

Newcastle also have a contract ready for Smalling until the summer of 2024.

What is Roma’s response?

Well, according to Il Romanista, Roma have turned it down.

Roma head coach Jose Mourinho, formerly at Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea, considers Smalling a key figure in his defence and does not want to sell him in the middle of the season.

Newcastle’s Chris Smalling bid was inevitable

In our view, Newcastle making a bid for Smalling was inevitable.

Why?

Well, because Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) wanted to sign the former Manchester United central defender back in the summer of 2020.

90min reported on May 6, 2020 than PIF were looking to sign Smalling in the summer of 2020.

PIF were still not the owners of Newcastle then.

And now that they own the Magpies, in our opinion, it was only a mater of time before they went back for Smalling.

But it seems that PIF have failed in their quest to sign Smalling.

Or have they?

We should not be surprised if Newcastle make another and improved bid for Smalling soon.
