Newcastle looking to tie up two more deals before weekend, after Wood

Transfer expert Dean Jones has told Give Me Sport that Newcastle United are working hard to get deals for Hugo Ekitike and Diego Carlos done before the weekend. It comes after the addition of Chris Wood, on Thursday.

Wood, 30, joins on a contract until June 2024 for a fee believed to be in the region of £25million. Newcastle activated the Burnley star’s contract – not only does it improve the Toon, but it weakens a direct relegation rival.

However, Newcastle are not done there. They are expected to continue their spending this month – and the next names on the agenda are Sevilla’s Carlos, and Reims wonderkid Ekitike. It could cost around £60million.

Ekitike, as per the Mail, is valued at £25million by Reims – though Newcastle do not want to exceed £20million. Sevilla want north of £30million. Jones says Newcastle are working to do both deals before the weekend.

“Ekiteke is genuine. They’re trying to close in on that and Diego Carlos as well. They’d love to get both of those deals done by the weekend if they can. I’m not sure if there will be time but they’re giving it a go,” Jones said.

Carlos and Ekitike: Newcastle window starting to look very strong

The signing of Kieran Trippier has been seen as a real coup. An England international, a La Liga title winner, a Euro 2020 finalist – all for £12million. Wood, meanwhile, is less of a coup – but more of a necessity.

They needed a striker before Watford and while they might have overpaid, they have severely weakened Burnley – while strengthening themselves. A double plus in their advantage, in their fight against the drop.

With Callum Wilson and Wood as options, another striker would have to be happy to play a bit-part role – or from out wide, and Ekitike could do that. Carlos would be the best signing of the lot.
