More than 200 Haitian migrants rescued by US Coast Guard

The US Coast Guard rescued greater than 200 Haitian migrants attempting to make their technique to the US this week.

The Coast Guard intercepted a 55-foot sail freighter carrying 183 individuals, 35 miles off Cap du Mole, Haiti on Wednesday, in response to the Miami Herald. The boat was stopped by the Coast Guard Cutter Resolute. The earlier week, the Coast Guard Cutter Diligence intercepted a freighter with 77 individuals aboard.

The migrants had been returned to Haiti days later, officers stated. Under federal legislation, the Coast Guard has the facility to grab a vessel in worldwide waters.

“Migrants attempting to enter the United States by sea are often on grossly overloaded, unseaworthy vessels, and without safety equipment,” stated Lt. David Steele, Coast Guard Liaison Officer on the U.S. Embassy in Haiti. “Sadly, many people have lost their lives in these attempts.”

The Coast Guard stated it has rescued 1,328 individuals trying the journey to the US by sea since October, 2000. Most of these — 1,119 — had been Haitian migrants, in response to the Coast Guard.

Last month, greater than 14,000 Haitian migrants crossed the US border into Del Rio, Texas. Many had been later returned to Haiti below Title 42, a federal well being provision that enables the US to expel migrants throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Later, 1000’s of Haitian migrants had been allowed to remain within the US.
