Magh Bihu 2022 Rituals

The first day of Magh Bihu, which is celebrated over two days, is known as Uruka or Bihu eve. To enjoy the feast, young people construct improvised shelters called Meji and Bhelaghar out of bamboo, leaves, and thatch. On this day, ladies prepare a feast with foods such as Chira, Pitha, Laru, and Curd. ‘Bhuj’ is organised at night, and people enjoy the wonderful food in the improvised huts while spending time with their loved ones. On the second day of the festivities, a post-harvesting ceremony known as Meji is held, and bonfires are lighted in the fields as people pray to their ancestral gods. People burn the improvised huts on this day as part of the Meji Jwaluwa rite.
