Speaking on the All to Play for Podcast, Joe Cole has been discussing Duncan Ferguson and the vacant Everton manager’s post.

Rafa Benitez was sacked last week, and the Toffees are now on the hunt for a replacement.

Wayne Rooney, Frank Lampard and Fabio Cannavaro have been linked, but Cole believes that Duncan Ferguson deserves the job.

Ferguson has been working as a backroom staff member at Everton for a number of years, and Cole believes that he deserves a shot at the top job.

What’s been said about Ferguson?

Cole put a case forward for the 50-year-old getting the job.

“I reckon he definitely deserves it. I think he would take it this time. I remember last time, we did the game for BT when he was in charge last time. It was like he was walking the team out and his eyes were bulging. He had Goodison Park rocking and they won the game. I thought he’d get the job there, but he came out afterwards and said he didn’t want it. But I’ve got a feeling this time he’ll think to himself ‘look we’ve had Ancelotti, we’ve had Benitez, we’ve had Martinez’,” Cole said.

There are cases to make on both sides here.

On one hand, Ferguson loves Everton – perhaps more than anyone else on the planet, and he would bring an unrivalled amount of passion to this role.

However, the Scot has never taken on a job of this size before, and while he’d have the backing of the fans, if his tactical nous isn’t there, he could quickly be found out.

Appointing Ferguson would be a gamble, and it may not be one that the Toffees are able to take right now.
