Duchess of Cambridge ‘can’t wait’ to meet new niece Lilibet Diana

The Duchess of Cambridge says she cannot wait to meet her new niece Lilibet, the daughter of her brother-in-law Prince Harry and his wife Meghan.

Catherine visited a school in Cornwall with US first lady Jill Biden on Friday, as senior members of the royal family joined world leaders for a series of events around the G7 summit in the UK.

Queen Elizabeth, her son Prince Charles and his wife Camilla, the heir’s eldest son Prince William and wife Catherine were all due to join the heads of some of the world’s richest nations, gathering for a three-day meeting in south-west England.

“I wish her all the very best, I can’t wait to meet her because we haven’t yet met her yet so hopefully that will be soon,” Catherine told reporters, when asked about her new niece.

Lilibet ‘Lili’ Diana Mountbatten-Windsor, named after Prince Harry’s grandmother Queen Elizabeth and his late mother, Princess Diana, was born one week ago at the Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital in California.

Her birth comes almost a year and a half after Harry and Meghan announced that they intended to step down from their royal roles, plunging the family into crisis.

The couple’s relationship with the other royals further deteriorated in March following an interview with Oprah Winfrey, in which they accused one unnamed royal of making a racist remark and said Meghan’s pleas for help were ignored by the Palace.

Joe and Jill Biden to meet with Queen

The British royals are playing a prominent role at the G7, with Charles and William also hosting an event between business chiefs and the world leaders to discuss how the private sector can work with governments to tackle climate change.

The Queen, who will also take part in an event with Catherine after the G7 reception, is due to meet the Bidens for tea at Windsor Castle on Sunday after the summit has concluded.

“Joe and I are both looking forward to meeting the Queen,” the first lady said on Thursday.

For Ms Biden, the trip echoes similar school visits by former US first ladies Melania Trump and Michelle Obama on their trips to Britain, although they did not have a royal to accompany them.

During Friday’s appearance, Ms Biden and Catherine visited four- and five-year-olds at Connor Downs Academy in Hayle.

“I wanted to say a personal thank you and welcome to Dr Biden, it’s a huge honour,” Catherine said as she opened a discussion on early years education, one of the main focal points of her charity work.

The school works with children who have experienced trauma. It also has outdoor classrooms where children plant vegetables and flowers and tend to rabbits.

Ms Biden and Catherine sat with children in a classroom as they learned about environmental issues, and then watched, chatting and laughing, as the children fed the class’s rabbit outside.

“These kids are so smart,” Ms Biden said.
