Cheryl Hickmon has passed away

Cheryl Hickmon, National President and Chair of the National Board of Directors of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, has passed away (1962-2022).

The organisation said she “transitioned peacefully” on Wednesday (January 20th) after a recent illness. A cause of death hasn’t been made public at the time of writing.

Delta Sigma Theta was founded on January 13th, 1913 by 22 women on the campus of Howard University to promote the importance of community service and academic excellence.

Her career and legacy explored

According to a biography piece from Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Cheryl was a native of Hartford, Connecticut and attended South Carolina State University in Orangeburg.

She had been a member of the sorority for 39 years, having first joined through the Alpha Xi Chapter before she held various leadership roles at local and national level at Delta Sigma Theta.

Some of her roles within the organisation included Eastern Regional Director and South Atlantic Regional Representative, among others. Cheryl was elected the 27th national president of Delta Sigma Theta in November 2021.

Professionally, she was a clinical laboratory technologist and was highly-skilled in Andrology and Endocrinology.

Tributes paid to Cheryl Hickmon

Delta Sigma Theta members and other organisations are mourning Cheryl’s death as emotional tributes poured out on social media.

Zeta Phi Beta wrote in a Twitter tribute: “We send our deepest condolences to the women of @dstinc1913 on the passing of your National President, Cheryl A Hickmon. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and your members.”

Alpha Kappa Alpha said: “The members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority join our sisters of Delta Sigma Theta in mourning the passing of Cheryl A. Hickmon, National President.  We will keep President Hickmon’s family, friends and sorority sisters in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”

Florida politician and Delta Sigma Theta member Val Demings wrote: “As a member of @dstinc1913, I am devastated by the sad news of the passing of our beloved National President, Cheryl A. Hickmon. My prayers are with President Hickmon’s family, friends, and all members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.”
