Ben Mee has claimed that Burnley ‘can’t get rid’ of players like Chris Wood amid rumours that Newcastle are close to signing him, as he told Sky Sports News (11/01/22 at 6:30 pm).

The Burnley centre-back made it clear that Wood is an ‘important’ player for the Clarets and he is ‘sure’ that his teammate will get his form back for the club.

Well, that might not happen because there are suggestions that Wood is heading to Newcastle for a medical, as reported by Sky Sports.

The New Zealand international seemingly had a clause in his contract, which has since been met by the big pockets of the Magpies, and he is now heading to St James’ Park.

If Wood does leave Burnley for Newcastle, then it would seriously weaken a Sean Dyche team already struggling in the bottom three, alongside Eddie Howe’s side.

Nonetheless, this is what Mee said about transfer speculation and the importance of Wood.

“The trivial side of it, you may be used to look at more,” said Mee. “But now I think you are a bit more experienced to hearsay.

“There was a bit about me in the press and it just comes from nowhere and you kind of get used to it. You sort of shut your mind off to it.

“We can’t be getting rid of players, especially during this stage of the season and the situation we are in. We need every man we have got.

“He’s (Wood) an important player for us. And he has been important for the past few seasons for us without scoring goals. We want him to get back to scoring goals and be the Chris Wood we know he can be. And he is working towards that. And I am sure he will be with us.”

Given that Wood is 30-years-old and only has three goals to his name this season, some would question whether Newcastle are making the right move.

One thing is for sure, Wood will make them stronger, he suits the style Howe wants to play, he has the experience and understanding of dealing with relegation battles.

But perhaps the most important of them all is the fact that the Magpies will make their relegation rivals weaker.

For both these teams, if this transfer goes through, then this is a serious turn of the tide in the fight to survive
