Following the admission, people took to Twitter to share their thoughts and opinions over the situation. Whilst many were upset, others decided that the best way to express their feelings over the PM’s lockdown party was with memes. Take a look below at some of our favourites…

Boris Johnson apologises for lockdown party

On 12th January, Boris Johnson discussed his attendance at a lockdown party in May 2020. He explained:

“Number 10 is a big department with the garden as an extension of the office which has been in constant use because of the role of fresh air in stopping the virus.”

Stating that he was only there for 25 minutes just after 6pm, Mr Johnson said that he believed “implicitly” that it was a work event, not a party.

Mr Johnson explained that “with hindsight” he should have sent everyone back inside and found some other way to thank them. He also stated that although it could have been said to “technically” fall within the guidance, there would be “millions and millions of people who simply wouldn’t see it that way.”

PM faces questioning over party comments

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer took to the stand to question Mr Johnson, and called his explanation for having attended the party as “ridiculous” and “offensive to the British public.” Speaking about Mr Johnson, Mr Starmer said:

“He’s finally been forced to admit what everyone knew, that when the whole country was locked down he was hosting boozy parties in Downing Street. Is he now going to do the decent thing and resign?”

To which Boris replied: “I appreciate the point that he’s making about the event that I attended, I want to repeat that I thought it was a work event and Mr speaker, I regret very much that we did not do things differently that evening.”

The prime minister continued on to say that he takes “responsibility” for what happened and apologised again.
